The Book Project - Longmans Publishing

Working in the in-house graphic design department of Longman I produced a number of book jacket designs and layed out book text for the Longman's children's book project. This was over a number of months during the summer college break.

It was good pressured experience of difficult jobs which had to hit tight deadlines.

Design

	The imagery and extensive book text was provided by the Design Studio director.

	The book cover was designed initially for customer approval, and the Children's publishing department's approval.

Artwork

	High resolution image scanning took place with some image manipulation in Photoshop.

	Production and tracing of some of the artwork in Freehand and Illustrator and at times some further stylising in Photoshop.

	The elements were then laid out in Quarkxpress on the Mac and prepared in CMYK ready for print as artwork.

	The artwork in this case was 'imposed' ready for the printer to go straight to film and plate.

Print and Finishing

	The artwork was sent to checked for grammar and spelling in the publishing department . A colour proof was sent back for archiving.

	Any major amendments were made in the artwork and re-sent to the printer, though minor amendments were generally made by the printer.

	The job was printed in Singapore, and samples were held for portfolio purposes in the design department, and in the publishing departments.

	The finished job was held in the Longmans office for marketing distribution to educational estblishments on request.
